Interior Design for Family Life | Victorian Home, Walthamstow

This Victorian end-of-terrace home in Walthamstow had been in planning and discussion for many years. Located within a conservation area, the extension required careful consideration, made more complex by the decision to coordinate the works with neighbouring properties. By building jointly, both households improved their chances of securing planning consent while benefiting from construction efficiencies, reduced costs and a streamlined party wall agreement.

The project began with a detailed re-planning exercise to adapt the tight footprint of a Victorian terrace for modern family life. Upstairs, the layout was completely reworked. A former rear box room and bathroom were combined to create a generous double bedroom with space for a home office, while the original middle bedroom was reconfigured to form two bathrooms. A loft conversion added a further double bedroom, transforming the house into a well-balanced three-bedroom, two-bathroom family home. Integrated storage was introduced throughout, including under-stair cupboards and built-in kitchen seating with concealed storage.

The rear kitchen extension was designed to feel full of character and warmth. As an end-of-terrace property, the house allowed increased ceiling height and an exposed timber roof structure, creating a dramatic sense of volume. Crittall-style doors connect the space to the garden, while hanging plants, terracotta floor tiles and a bespoke dark green kitchen bring a relaxed, sun-warmed atmosphere. Careful planning allowed space for a compact island and a large family dining table within the narrow footprint.

Colour plays a central role throughout the home, adding depth, joy and personality. From richly painted ceilings and warm-toned living spaces to softer, light-enhancing hues in the bedrooms, each room was carefully considered. Cost-effective solutions, including adapted off-the-shelf furniture, sit alongside bespoke details, layered art and handcrafted rugs, resulting in a home that feels expressive, practical and deeply personal.

“Trifle transformed our home from an ordinary terraced house into a much loved, warm, bold and contemporary home. Our friends say it feels like being on holiday in our kitchen thanks to the warm Mediterranean palette and abundance of plants. Our home has also been featured in 4 books to date!”
