Facilitating a Workspace Evolution

trifle’s Emma Morley features in Facilitate Magazine

Trifle’s Founder and Director, Emma Morley was invited by Facilitate Magazine to write about the importance of creating relevant and productive office spaces and cultures that are inclusive, and that people want to be a part of. Here’s what she had to say, published in the September edition of the magazine.

Flexible Working

Organisations are currently navigating the ‘workspace conundrum' of office, home, or hybrid working. But trying too hard to solve it or find balance might be where we are going wrong, because nothing is fixed, and everything is in flux.

Welcoming Office

We need to be able to articulate what the purpose of our workplaces are, why our people should work there, and how their needs are met by the physical space we provide. Is there better technology at the workplace compared with employees' homes? Are there more opportunities to collaborate? Does the workplace enable employees to do their jobs better?

Workplace Strategy

One of our clients, Richard Moross, CEO at MOO, refers to workplace choreography or the rhythm of employees" working styles and needs. Businesses need to monitor these habits and practices over days and weeks for a clear idea of whether employees' stated preferences match real behaviour.

Coordinated Approach

Someone we frequently collaborate with is workplace strategist Kursty Groves, most recently on the new HQ for MVF, Shoreditch and for who stresses the importance of facilities departments to reach beyond their borders to work with other departments. A coordinated approach will produce better insights and more effective results.

High-Performing Workspaces

Inter-departmental collaboration means thinking beyond the simplistic idea of using 'perks' to draw people back in. Instead, it enables us to focus on the whole experience of working in a high-performing environment, which in turn guides us in creating spaces and cultures that people want to be part of.

We are at the early stages of this evolution so opt for insight-led space planning and design that can be easily adapted in-house. Be willing to learn and adapt. Set a minimum timeline of six months to think about what your teams need. As Groves says: "Be really clear on where you are right now and where you want to be."
